Orb, trained by Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey, rallied from well back of the field to win the $2 million Grade 1 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. Palace Malice set an unexpected pace after adding blinkers and blazed the first six furlongs in 22.58, 45.33 and 1:09.80, setting things up perfectly for the off-the-pace runners. Normandy Invasion took control of the race at the top of the pace but Orb, a horse that trained beautifully all week long at Churchill Downs and is impeccably bred by the Janney/Phipps Stable, would not be denied.
