Kentucky Derby 2013 video: Orb storms down the stretch to win

Orb won the 2013 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville on Saturday. If you missed the race -- or just want to relive it -- you can watch the “Fastest 2 minutes in Sports” right now.

Palace Malice set a fast pace and led early, but could not keep it up and watched as Normandy Invasion made his move around the final turn. But Orb, who’d run in the pack for much of the race, saved his best for last and stormed down the stretch to win the rose garland.

Orb had 6/1 odds entering the race.

The 139th running of the Kentucky Derby was a bit sloppy, with rain on and off passing through Louisville leaving the middle of the track muddy and the inside rail relatively firm.

Orb will be trying to join I’ll Have Another (2012) and Big Brown (2008) in being the latest horse to win the first two races of horse racing’s Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. Neither horse even completed the Belmont Stakes. I’ll Have Another scratched the day before the race.

Affirmed in 1978 was the last horse to win the Triple Crown.
