Last night was the Sports Emmy Awards in New York City, something Richard Deitsch proclaimed “a flawed backslapping festival.“ Bill Simmons claims that a lot of anti-ESPN sentiment runs through the ceremony, and given that a 30 for 30 documentary has never won, I’d bet he’s correct. In fact, the gang at Awful Announcing may be planning something of an alternative to the Sports Emmys that I may be participating in later in the month, but I fear I’ve already said too much.

Anyway, some people did actually go home with Emmys last night, and some were interesting and a lot were NBC. Al Michaels took home best play-by-play, his seventh career win. Bob Costas won best sudio host, his 25th career win (seriously). Cris Collinsworth won best analyst for the fifth-straight year. Pierre McGuire, NBC’s “Inside the Glass” reporter for its hockey coverage, was part of a double-winner for best reporter, as Tom Verducci also won. It was the first Emmy for both.
Elsewhere, Inside the NFL on Showtime won for best weekly studio show, while MLB Tonight won for best daily studio show. Charles Barkley won best studio analyst, and NBC won for best live sports special with its coverage of Super Bowl XLVI. Here’s a complete list of winners.
