Friends, it’s time once again to convene for a GIF TOURNAMENT. In the first tournament, we crowned ROLLERBLADING RAPTORS MASCOT the greatest animated sports GIF in the history of the universe, which it shall be forever. BUCK SHOWALTER won the second tournament, and TIM LINCECUM took the crown in GIF TOURNAMENT III.
GIF Tournament IV: The quest for the best sports GIF of the year
Once again, it’s time for us to review the greatest animated sports GIFs of the last six months, and crown an immortal. Vote, and help us determine GIF greatness.
Since we began these GIF tournaments, the world of sports GIFs has exploded. Once the near-exclusive territory of message boards and link farms, GIFs are created by bloggers everywhere. We make them, CBS Sports makes them, Deadspin makes them, Twitter folks make them. They’re everywhere, and we’re falling headlong into a future in which the humble GIF captures most every sports moment worth remembering.
Today, GIF TOURNAMENT IV commences, featuring 32 of the best GIFs from the year 2013 to date. Every champion you voted for in THIS WEEK IN GIFs received an automatic bid, and many second-place finishers are here as well. To boot, I have also selected seven GIFs for inclusion that we missed the first time around, but that are so remarkable that they deserve a shot at immortality.
Each match-up will be put to a public vote, and together, we will decide which GIFs advance to the next round. Here is the schedule:
TUESDAY: First round (West region)
WEDNESDAY: First round (East region)
THURSDAY: Sweet 16
FRIDAY: Elite Eight
MONDAY: Final Four
TUESDAY: Championship
WEDNESDAY: [mystery bonus round]
