Augie Grill takes a leave of absence from Southern Super Series following disqualification at Five Flags Speedway

Augie Grill had won the Southern Super Series Pepsi Max 125 at Five Flags Speedway but a disqualification left him frustrated and uninterested in racing on the tour for awhile.

MOBILE, Ala. -- Augie Grill has sworn off the Southern Super Series for the time being, following his disqualification on Friday night after winning the Pepsi Max 125 at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Fla.

The Hayden, Ala. Super Late Model driver took to his Facebook page this morning to criticize his disqualification and added that the tour would have to make do without his services for the time being.

As a result, Grill has not entered tonight’s The Great Race 125 at Mobile International Speedway and may not show up for the World Crown 300 on July 4 at Gresham Motorsports Park -- one of the most prestigious short track races in the country.

Grill entered the weekend third in the championship standings but received no points or cash payout after he failed technical inspection, for an improper fuel mixture following his victory.

Head technical inspector Ricky Brooks and his staff found traces of an unapproved fuel substance in the car and it cost Grill the victory. As the title sponsor of the Southern Super Series, Sunoco mandates that only their purple blend be used in the tour and Grill had traces of VP 110.

As first reported by Speed 51, Brooks uses a machine from Sunoco that detects the dye placed in their fuel. If a fuel other than the Sunoco purple is detected by the machine, the word "FAIL" is displayed on the screen.

If the fuel passes, it says "PASS."

Brooks had been stressing the importance of running only Sunoco purple, including in the drivers meeting on Friday afternoon but hadn’t used the machine until Friday night, the seventh race on the Super Series schedule.

Grill had won three consecutive races, including Pensacola and four overall and may have had the same mixture in his car for those victories but hadn’t been caught until the machine was implemented -- adding to his frustration.

As is stands, Grill may take a few weeks off but he is expected back at some point.
