College World Series 2013: Mississippi State fans rolling deep in Omaha

Judging from Twitter reports on Omaha’s fan distribution Monday, college baseball is a WAY bigger deal in Mississippi than it is in Los Angeles. No one’s surprised there.

If social media is to be believed (and it always is, right?), Mississippi State fans are turning up in droves to Omaha, Neb. for Monday night’s College World Series finals game between the Bulldogs and the UCLA Bruins. Twitter has been blowing up all day with reports of the staggering numbers of maroon and white faithful that have temporarily taken over the city.

That’s the line this morning to buy general admission tickets to Monday’s game.

UCLA fans, on the other hand, are notably MIA:

At the same time, you’d probably have better luck finding an Obama voter at an NRA convention than you would finding an Obama voter at a Mississippi State sporting event, but we get your point.

In fairness, Starkville is roughly nine hours closer to Omaha than L.A. is, but judging from the excitement in Mississippi, the Bulldog faithful would still be showing up if this game was played at the bottom of the Mariana Trench.

For a better idea on the disparity between college baseball’s popularity between the two locations, check out these nuggets on attendance numbers:

According to the final 2013 Baseball Attendance Report, Mississippi State ranked fourth in the nation with an average draw of 7,617 fans per game. UCLA was not among the top 44 schools listed in the report.

Omaha’s TD Ameritrade Park has 24,000-plus seats, most of which it seems will be filled with Bulldog fans come first pitch at 8 p.m. ET.

UPDATE: Reports of a Bulldog takeover don’t seem to be exaggerated.
