Weekend Ratings Breakdown: Heat-Pacers, NASCAR, Bruins-Penguins tops

The Eastern Conference Finals in both the NBA and NHL posted excellent numbers this weekend.

USA TODAY Sports

This is Weekend Ratings Breakdown, which takes a look at all the ratings from big sporting events over the past weekend. Numbers are from Sports Business Daily, while some of the numbers come from press releases via NBC and ESPN.

Saturday, June 1

12 p.m. ET - French Open, Third Round (NBC): 1.1
2 p.m. ET - Stars on Sports (CBS): 0.4
3 p.m. ET - PGA Tour: The Memorial, Third Round (CBS): 1.8
3 p.m. ET - College Rugby Championship (NBC): 0.5
3:30 p.m. ET - IndyCar: Chevy Dual in Detroit, Part 1 (ABC): 0.7
4:30 p.m. ET - Prefontaine Classic (NBC): 0.9
7 p.m. ET - MLB: regional action (Boston vs. NY Yankees, Washington vs. Atlanta, San Francisco vs. St. Louis, Cincinnati vs. Pittsburgh, Arizona vs. CHI Cubs) (Fox): 2.5
8 p.m. ET - Stanley Cup Playoffs: Boston vs. Pittsburgh, Game 1 (NBC): 2.5
8:30 p.m. ET - NBA Playoffs: Miami vs. Indiana, Game 6 (TNT): 6.2

Analysis: While the NBA obviously crushed everything in its path, the NHL was also a big winner this weekend. Despite tying baseball in the overnights, the NHL won in preliminary viewers (3.4 million to 3.2 million) and adults 18-49 (1.2 to 0.7). The NHL tied its highest overnight rating for a non-Stanley Cup Final playoff game since 1998. The only other game to hit a 2.5 was Game 6 of Bruins vs. Capitals in Round 1 last year. It drew a higher overnight than Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final, which aired in primetime on the comparable date last year.

The Memorial began a down weekend with Tiger out of the mix. Round 3’s 1.8 was a big drop from the 2.5 last year. MLB On Fox, which had Red Sox vs. Yankees in 57 percent of the country, was down a tick from a 2.6 for Yankees vs. Tigers last year. The French Open was up a tick from a 1.0 last year. The Prefontaine Classic dropped big, from a 1.2 in 2012.

Sunday, June 2

1 p.m. ET - French Open, Round of 16 (NBC): 1.2
1:15 p.m. ET - NASCAR Sprint Cup: Dover (Fox): 3.5
2 p.m. ET - PGA Tour 2013: Golf’s Dads (CBS): 0.6
3 p.m. ET - PGA Tour: The Memorial, Final Round (CBS): 2.2
3:30 p.m. ET - IndyCar: Chevy Dual in Detroit, Part 2 (ABC): 0.8
4 p.m. ET - College Rugby Championship (NBC): 0.6

Analysis: Despite topping the weekend on the broadcast networks, NASCAR was down a tick from last year’s 3.6 for the FedEx 400. The Memorial dropped big from the 3.7 for Tiger’s win last year. IndyCar was basically even for the series’ first two-part race. Sunday’s coverage was up from last year’s 0.7 for one race. The French Open was up again, from a 1.0 last year.
