2013 Belmont Stakes: Always in a Tiz out of Belmont, field down to 14

For the first time since 1996, the Belmont Stakes will have a field of 14 horses after Always in a Tiz pulled out of consideration.

Always in a Tiz opted out of the 2013 Belmont Stakes, dropping the field for Saturday’s race to 14 horses. Instead of racing in the Belmont Stakes, Always in a Tiz will instead compete in one of the undercard races, according to a release from the New York Racing Association.

Always in a Tiz will instead run in the Easy Goer Stakes on Saturday, one of the undercard races prior to the Belmont Stakes. Anthony Bonomo Jr., the manager of the Brooklyn Boyz Stables which owns the horse, said the decision was made for the future of the horse.

“To put him in a mile-and-a-half race after a while off and after all this work we put in, it didn’t seem like the right thing to do,” Bonomo said, via David Grening of Daily Racing Form. “We want to look more to the future than one race. God forbid we run him and we knock him out again. We want to try to get ready for Saratoga and everything else.”

Always in a Tiz was likely to be a heavy underdog in the Belmont Stakes and his departure will leave the field at 14 horses for the first time since the 1996 Belmont Stakes.
