Palace Malice wins the 2013 Belmont Stakes

Palace Malice won the mile-and-a-half race at Belmont Park in New York.

NBC Sports

Palace Malice won the 2013 Belmont Stakes, the 145th running of one of horse racing’s marquee events.

Palace Malice led much of the Kentucky Derby before fading down the stretch. This time, they took the blinkers off, and it seemed to pay off. He ran in a pack near the front for most of the race before making his move while rounding the final turn. He finished strong down the stretch with Orb surging a bit too late to catch him.

Palace Malice’s odds were 15/1 just before the race.

All three jewels of the Triple Crown have now been won by different horses. Orb won the Kentucky Derby in early May, but Oxbow led the Preakness from start to finish to end any hopes of crowning a Triple Crown winner. Affirmed remains the last horse to win each of the three jewels, doing so in 1978 with a trio of victories over Alydar.

The Belmont did offer the opportunity for either Orb or Oxbow to add to bragging rights, or for Revolutionary to save face after the Derby letdown. Orb entered as the favorite, with odds laid at 2/1 earlier in the day. Revolutionary, a horse many expected to win the Kentucky Derby, had 5/1 odds. Oxbow fell to 9/1 during the day Saturday. As it turns out, none of that happened.

With a different horse winning each race, we’ll have to wait to find out which horse is honored as the top three-year-old of the year later this year. The Breeders’ Cup, which will be won in November, may just end up as a tiebreaker.
