The worst-kept secret in the A-League was confirmed today as Melbourne Victory released Marquee Player Marcos Flores after a single season, according to a brief club press release. The 27-year-old Argentine departs Melbourne having completed just one of the two years his contract stipulated.
Marcos Flores released by Melbourne Victory
Could Flores be headed to championship holders Central Coast Mariners? And who will the Victory recruit as an international Marquee?

The Victory had previously been linked with Giorgos Karagounis but the Greek captain is apparently no longer fielding offers from the Melbourne side. Yet even with the original reason for jettisoning Flores now not available, Ange Postecoglou has set the former Johnny Warren medal winner adrift.
Earlier reporting suggested Flores could make his way to Central Coast Mariners as their first ever Marquee Player, which is now much more likely given Flores’ release from the Victory. Though the handsomely paid Argentine’s every move will be followed, at least as long as he is considering other A-League clubs, the Victory’s search for an international Marquee Player will dominate headlines until the position has been filled.
