Matt McKay, who captained the 2010/11 premiership and championship double winners, is back at Brisbane Roar, having signed a two-year contract. The 30-year-old Socceroo regular rejoins Thomas Broich and new signing Liam Miller in a very strong midfield at Suncorp Stadium.

The Roar’s former captain signs with Brisbane following two years in Scotland, Korea and China.
Following six seasons with the Roar, capped by the double-winning 2010/11 campaign, McKay departed Brisbane for Rangers in the Scottish Premier League. Yet he hardly played in Scotland before the club’s financial woes required a massive dumping of wages in the summer of 2012. Busan IPark was willing to pay for McKay’s services so the then 28-year old moved to Korea. That successful season led to a transfer to Changchun Yatai of the Chinese Super League for the 2013 season. In July, after 16 appearances, McKay had his contract terminated and began the process of returning to the A-League.
Said McKay in a club press release:
“I’m very happy to be back in Brisbane and back at the Roar. This club and this city is so close to my heart and I’m really looking forward to that moment when I pull on the orange jersey again and walk out onto Suncorp Stadium.”
Roar Managing Director Sean Dobson added:
“We are delighted Matt has returned home, a goal we have been working towards for the past 18 months, and the timing couldn’t have been better.”
Brisbane has lost long time midfielders Mitch Nichols, who quit the club and then signed with Melbourne Victory, and Massimo Murdocca, who signed with Melbourne Heart, this offseason. McKay’s return helps offset those departures and brings a fan favorite and key Socceroo back to the A-League.
McKay will train with the club for the first time today at Ballymore Stadium, his former home ground when he played with Brisbane Strikers from 2001-04.
