SummerSlam Results: Alberto Del Rio retains the World Heavyweight Championship with win over Christian

Christian gets his one more match for the World Heavyweight Championship, but couldn’t capitalize against Albertoooooooo del Rrrrrrrriiiiiiooooo.

The hastily-conceived World Heavyweight Championship feud reaches its finish, as champion Alberto del Rio faces the man with the longest tights in the business, Christian. Del Rio, a Mexican aristocrat who talked about America as the land of opportunity when wrestling against tea partier Jack Swagger, insists that the ring announcer introduce him in Spanish now that he’s the self-appointed representative of all Latinos. Troll hard, ADR.

Both of these guys are great in the ring, though they have struggled to bring heat to the match in the run-up to SummerSlam. It doesn’t take long for Del Rio to start dropping brutal counters to Christian’s standard offense. Del Rio attacks Christian’s shoulder for two good reasons: It limits the ability of Christian to land his Spear finisher, and it makes Del Rio’s own finisher, a spinning armbreaker, more effective.

Del Rio punished Christian early with kicks and shots to the shoulder, but missed a dive and ended up on the arena floor. Christian responded by going to the top turnbuckle and dropping a splash on Del Rio, leaving both wrestlers laying on the mats. Del Rio got Christian back into the ring, but missed an elbow from the second turnbuckle, then walked into a perfect dropkick from Christian. A cross-body press from the middle rope got Christian a near-fall.

Del Rio, channelling his inner Ric Flair, called for a timeout, then gouged Christian in the eyes. A nasty backbreaker got Del Rio a two count, and a roundhouse kick drew another near-fall. Del Rio tried to land a suplex from the second rope, which Christian nearly countered with a sunset flip. Del Rio worked out of the flip, then hammered Christian with a drop kick to the face as Christian went for the Spear. Somehow, Christian kicked out at two.

Christian landed the Spear with the injured shoulder, but could not recover to get the pin. Del Rio capitalized, grabbing the injured arm and putting the armbreaker in place. After a valiant attempt at getting to the ropes, Christian tappped out. Del Rio wins and retains in the match of the night so far.

After the match, Del Rio cut a promo declaring himself the hero of all Latinos. The man is a great heel when he wants to be.
