The Saints added some muscle to their defense on Thursday.

The Saints were looking to be beef up their defensive line and did so on Thursday with a familiar face by re-signing defensive end Jay Richardson, according to Larry Holder of NOLA.com. The fifth-year veteran was signed by the Saints during the off-season and was released during final cuts in late-August.

Richardson has not played in an NFL regular season since 2010. The 6'6, 280-pound defender was selected by the Raiders in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL Draft. He spent three years in Oakland before moving on to the Seahawks in 2010. He was out of football for all of 2011, but competed in training camp for the Jets last year and was cut before start of the season.

For his career, Richardson has compiled 117 tackles and seven sacks in 55 games. He will play defensive end in the Saints’ new 3-4 defense.

The Saints travel to Tampa Bay for an NFC South clash against the Buccaneers in Week 2.
