Late Steven McGarry goal earns 10-man Perth Glory a 1-1 draw against Melbourne Heart

The second game in four days between the two teams featured nine yellow cards, a sending off and two terrific goals.

Wind, rain and a red card could not prevent two superb goals as 10-man Perth Glory drew Melbourne Heart 1-1 at the Hyundai Stadium in Mandurah. Harry Kewell’s 84th minute goal from the edge of the box was cancelled out by a long-distance Steven McGarry goal just four minutes later, preventing Heart from equalling the Glory’s win when the two sides played midweek.

Steve Pantelidis was sent off in the 40th minute when he picked up his second yellow card, leaving Perth shorthanded for the game’s final fifty minutes. Having previously been booked, Pantelidis’ dismissal was controversial and even Kewell tried to persuade referee Gareth Morgan to rescind. The defender was the victim of circumstance as Aziz Behich came in late on Josh Risdon and sparked a fracas involving a dozen players. In total, Morgan handed out nine yellow cards.

After a scoreless first half, Iain Ramsay, Mate Dugandzic and substitute trialist Andrea Migliorini each forced good second half saves from Danny Vukovic. The Perth goalkeeper was on his way to securing the Glory a second straight clean sheet against Heart until Kewell powered a low shot into the goal just six minutes from time. At the other end, McGarry produced a spectacular shot from twenty-five yards to equalize for the Glory and leave the game level.
