Ernie Merrick has added yet another youngster to the fold today as Wellington Phoenix have announced the signing of Australian fullback Josh Brindell-South. The 20-year-old spent last season at Moreton Bay United of National Premier League Queensland before joining the Phoenix on trial this offseason. An injured groin on his third day of his trial threatened his chance to impress Merrick, but the manager allowed him to rehabilitate with Wellington and Brindell-South’s second trial has led to his formal signing.

The 20-year-old fullback makes the jump from NPL to A-League.
Said Merrick, in a club press release:
”Josh is a fullback who can cover left and right and his resume is quite impressive. He won best and fairest awards at his club, and being in the NPL means he has been playing at a good standard from a young age. What I really like is that he is a very attacking minded fullback and his fitness testing, now that he has finished rehab, is in the superior endurance level.
“The fact that he came in with a slight injury we didn’t know about shows he was determined to impress us. I believe it was worth waiting five weeks while he rehabilitated because for a young lad he has a very professional outlook and does all the right things.”
Brindell-South is the seventh player at Wellington aged 20 or younger as Merrick casts his first season in New Zealand with a combination of long-time veterans and up-and-comers.
