James Troisi has come to the A-League today, signed by Melbourne Victory on a one-year loan from Atalanta/Juventus. The 25-year-old Adelaide native, whose rights are co-owned by the Serie A clubs, joins Marquee Player Pablo Contreras as major Victory signings this week, bolstering a roster that had not been significantly altered in terms of additions until fairly recently. While Mitch Nichols joined the club early in the winter, Kosta Barbarouses was the only other significant addition to the side that lost Marco Rojas, Marcos Flores, Daniel Mullen and Billy Celeski since the end of 2012/13.

Troisi began his professional career at Newcastle United in 2007/08 but did not make any first team appearances in the Premier League. The then 20-year-old moved to Turkey joining Gençlerbirliği for one season before moving on to Kayserispor through the 2011/12 season. In total, he appeared in almost 100 Süper Lig matches. Last offseason, Troisi moved to Atalanta of Serie A where he appeared in just eight matches last season.

The 25-year-old joins a crowded attacking group with Barbarouses and Nichols added to Archie Thompson, Guy Finkler and up-and-comer Conner Pain. Ange Postecoglou will have his work cut out in deciphering a way to include most or all of those players, but having too many strong attackers should be considered a better situation than too few.

Said Postecoglou in a club press release:

“Throughout his time in Europe, James has shown that he has the talent and attributes to compete at the highest levels of club football. At just 25, James in the prime of his career, so we are extremely excited about what he will bring to Melbourne Victory. He obviously has a desire to get back into the Socceroos set-up, and there’s no better way to state his case than to have an impressive A-League season.”

Troisi will join the Victory in Tasmania ahead of their pre-season friendly against Western Sydney Wanderers.
