Del Piero return not enough as Sydney FC finish pre-season with 3-0 loss to Perth Glory

Two goals and an assist from Jamie Maclaren were more than enough to earn Perth the victory in the Sydney suburbs.

Goals in both halves from Jamie Maclaren sandwiched a Sidnei Sciola goal as Perth Glory earned a 3-0 victory over Sydney FC at WIN Jubilee in the Sydney suburb of Kogarah. Maclaren also assisted on Sciola’s goal, putting a damper on Alessandro Del Piero’s first game with the Sky Blues since the club returned from its tour of Italy in August.

Maclaren opened scoring on the quarter hour, scoring from just outside the six yard box, after fine work on the wing by Josh Risdon. Sydney replied with pressure throughout the rest of the first half, but none of the chances created amounted to anything more than a save. The best opportunity for the Sky Blues came when debutant Nikola Petkovic’s cross was headed on frame by Richard Garica, only to be tipped over the bar by Danny Vukovic in the 33rd minute.

Perth put the game out of reach moments after half-time when Maclaren’s lobbed ball sent Sciola through on goal with the Glory’s Brazilian signing scoring the team’s second goal. In need of goals, Sydney sent more bodies forward in the second half but were unable to inflict damage on Perth. In injury time, Maclaren cooly chipped Ivan Necevski from 25 yards to leave New South Wales with a three-goal victory.

The game in Kogarah represents the end of pre-season friendlies for both clubs as the A-League regular season is now less than two weeks away. Sydney will open the league’s fixtures on Friday October 11 in hosting Newcastle Jets at the Allianz Stadium. Perth begin their season on Sunday October 13 against Adelaide United at the Coopers Stadium.
