Marcelo breaks ankle, out 3 months

Bad news for Brazil and Real Madrid left back Marcelo: The defender will be out for three months with an ankle fracture. It wasn't even a match that sidelined the 24-year-old, as the CBF report that he left Sunday's training session with an 'ankle sprain' that turned out to be a break when he went in for a scan. It's unclear how Marcelo, who's now back in Madrid receiving treatment, picked up the injury, but it's pretty deeply unfortunate for everyone not named Fabio Coentrao.

And even Coentrao won't be that happy, because he's nursing a knock sustained during Portugal's 1-0 defeat at the hands of Russia. This leaves Jose Mourinho's side desperately short of cover on the left, and although Coentrao won't be out for nearly as long as Marcelo, who's sidelined until the new year, he's clearly number two in the pecking order at the Santiago Bernabeu, and losing the first-choice player for so long is pretty unfortunate. Depending on how quickly Coentrao recovers, we could be looking at a start for B-teamer Jorge Casado against Celta Vigo next weekend.
