Florida QB Treon Harris suspended amid sexual assault investigation

No charges have been filed against the true freshman.

True freshman Florida quarterback Treon Harris is being investigated for sexual assault, the school announced in a press release Monday. The statement says Harris is accused of “sexually assaulting a female student” early Sunday morning in a campus residence hall. The quarterback has been suspended from all team activities.

Beat writer David Jones is reporting charges have not yet been filed, and a portion of his article suggesting prosecution “sounds extremely difficult” has since been removed.

Update, 10/9/14: Harris’s lawyer, Huntley Johnson, has released a statement to the media.

This investigation will take some time:

The Gators delayed their regularly scheduled weekly presser earlier Monday before the news came out. Jones noted this was the first time in his over 20 years on the beat that the weekly press conference had been called off -- saying there was even one on 9/11.

Harris came off the bench to lead the Gators to victory over Tennessee, leading to a call from the Gator faithful (and a top-five recruit) to permanently replace Jeff Driskel with the young signal-caller. After Driskel started the game 11-23 with 59 yards and three interceptions, Harris took over in the fourth quarter and immediately led Florida on a touchdown drive. His second drive saw the Gators take the lead on a field goal -- one they were able to keep for the victory.

Alligator Army has a timeline of Monday's events. After the Tennessee game, AA said he "saved the day" for the Gators.

Harris was a four-star prospect out of Booker T. Washington High School in the Class of 2014, and was one of the Gators’ highest-profile signees this past February.

After an 11-2 season in 2012, Florida has struggled under Will Muschamp over the past year and a half. The Gators went 4-8 last season, losing to FCS Georgia Southern and missing a bowl game, and have won games against Kentucky and Tennessee this season by a total of seven points.
