The 2014 Breeders’ Cup is in the books and Saturday was a day for upsets. While a number of the favorites came through in the races on Friday, the opposite was true on Saturday. Several significant underdogs were able to come away with victories.
Breeders’ Cup 2014 results: Bayern claims Classic win
Bayern won the richest race in North America and capped the Breeders’ Cup by taking the Classic.

That was partially true in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic where pre-race favorite Shared Belief finished fourth. Instead, it was Bayern claiming a close victory with California Chrome not far behind. Here are the complete results from all of the races on Saturday.
Breeders' Cup
14 Hands Winery Juvenile Fillies
The first race of the day was a shocker, as Take Charge Brandi managed a huge upset win. How big an upset? The horse was a 60-1 favorite at the start of the day. Favorite Angela Renee (3-1) was off the board and did not run a good race. The purse for the race is $2 million. Top Decile and Wonder Gal took second and third place, respectively.

Filly & Mare Turf
Another favorite fell in the second race when Chad Brown’s Dayatthespa took the Filly & Mare Turf in a dominant performance, leading the whole way. Dank was the favorite at 5-2 coming into the race, with Dayatthespa at 8-1. Stephanie’s Kitten (also trained by Brown) took second with Just The Judge in third. Dank managed to finish fourth. The purse for this race was also $2 million.
DraftKings Filly & Mare Sprint
A favorite finally took the win in the third race on Saturday, as 5-year-old mare Judy the Beauty, who entered the day as a 5-2 favorite, edged out Better Lucky for the victory. Judy the Beauty took second in the same race a year ago, narrowly losing to Groupie Doll. This race had a purse of $1 million.
Turf Sprint
Bobby’s Kitten was the surprise winner in this one, in the horse’s sprint debut no less. With Bobby’s Kitten’s victory, Chad Brown now has three under his belt for this Breeders’ Cup. Bobby’s Kitten also started from the back in this one, making it all the more impressive. No Nay Never, the favorite, made second place, giving it up to Bobby’s Kitten down the final stretch. The race had a purse of $1 million. Wes Welker’s Undrafted finished third in the race.
Sentient Jet Juvenile
While not quite as big an upset as the first race, we had another longshot victorious on Saturday. Texas Red entered the day at 13-1 and pulled the upset in the Sentient Jet Juvenile. Carpe Diem, one of the favorites, placed second with Upstart in third. The purse for this race was $2 million.
Longines Turf
Main Sequence took this race in dominant fashion, out-pacing both Flintshire and Twilight Eclipse for the win. Main Sequence is still perfect on the season. Flintshire was the favorite to win the race, entering the day at 3-1. The payout for this one is $3 million, the second-highest on the day behind the Classic.

Xpressbet Sprint
Work All Week managed to down Secret Circle to win this race and a share of the $1.5 million purse. Secret circle was the favorite coming into the day at 9-2, but despite a hard-run race, Work All Week managed the victory. Work All Week was yet another longshot coming into the day.
Mile
Yet another upset occurred in the final non-Classic race of the day. Karakontie, who came into the day as a 30-1 favorite took the win. Toronado was the favorite at 5-2, but faded late and wound up finishing in eighth. Anodin and Trade Storm took second and third, respectively. The purse for the mile is $2 million.
Classic
Bayern won the richest race in North America by taking the Breeders’ Cup Classic in a very tightly contested race. Bayern was able to just edge out Toast of New York who finished in second just ahead of California Chrome. There was a little bit of controversy surrounding the race as Bayern broke a little to the side and made contact with favorite Shared Belief. There was an inquiry into the start, but the official decision held up with Bayern and Bob Baffert taking the title.
