For most of the season, my Friday piece has been a look at my rosters for the weekend, and the rationales therein, while my Saturday piece has been a more overarching look at some good and bad matchups for the week.
Theoretically, those were two pieces I should have worked on in tandem -- you know, figure out who I liked and didn’t at the same time I was filling out my roster. In some sense, I did, but not formally. Well, the last two weeks, I’ve figured out my topics for Saturday before coming up with my rosters for Friday, and this week it’s caused me to try something I haven’t tried before.
With my FanDuel rosters, I have tended to try for more balance -- one or two big names, then a bunch of next-man-up types who I expect to be able to score a touchdown, maybe accumulate some yardage. I rarely troll around in the deep end of the pool, for the simple reason that I’m gun-shy about flat zero fantasy points out of a roster. But I stumbled across a few deep dives this week that intrigued me, and by investing in them, it freed me up to go super-strong at the top end of my roster.
So this week, I’m performing an experiment. Below, you’ll find two rosters: one featuring super-cheap players mixed with superstars, and one with a more conventional (for me) mix of players. I’m entering both rosters twice: Once in a standard, top-heavy tournament, and once in a 50/50. Ultimately, a roster that does well in one will do well in both, but I want to see how the format makes my impression of it all change. I’ll toss in a brief explanation for my choices after the rosters; for more, tune in Saturday to my matchups look.
A few thoughts:
- I like Blake Bortles this week, as much as one can like Blake Bortles. The Jaguars have lost their running back for the season, and the Ravens have a relatively woeful pass defense. Plus, a quarterback at $6,400? That's tasty.
- I'm fairly skeptical of Marquess Wilson as a Brandon Marshall replacement, but if he explodes onto the scene, a $4,500 wide receiver can be a week-maker.
- This whole idea came about when I selected Tim Wright -- there are blemishes on every tight end this week, so why not save a lot of money and grab a super-cheap guy who is always a big touchdown threat?
- I'm much higher on Jay Cutler this week than most, but I love his matchup against the Saints and think he'll have a big game (just realized I have Cutler, Wilson, Matt Forte and Alshon Jeffery on these two rosters, which might be too Bears-heavy, but whatever).
- If it turns out Julio Jones can play Sunday, I'll be swapping Harry Douglas out, but otherwise that's a nice underpriced pick.
- Le'Veon Bell is still spectacular.
