Cam Newton was involved in a car accident in Charlotte on Tuesday afternoon. He was loaded onto a stretcher and into an ambulance after the wreck. Newton was taken to the hospital at 12:50 p.m. ET.
Cam Newton’s car overturns in accident outside Panthers stadium
Cam Newton was involved in an accident Tuesday when his truck overturned on a bridge. He is being held in a hospital overnight for observation after suffering two transverse process fractures in his lower back.
The extent of Newton's injuries does not appear to be serious. A spokesman with the Carolina Panthers told reporters that Newton suffered two transverse process fractures in his lower back. The injury could be similar to what Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo suffered in November. Romo sat out one game after fracturing two transverse processes in his back in Week 8, but was able to return in Week 10 and play well.
Newton reportedly did not suffer any internal injuries, and does not appear to have suffered any head injuries. He will remain at the hospital overnight for observation, just as the Panthers announced earlier in the afternoon. The Panthers’ spokesman said that he did not receive an indication that Newton would require surgery, and would not speculate whether he would miss playing time. Via USA Today:
“Right now, we’ve thought about Cam’s well being and hopefully the well being of someone else in the other car who was injured,” Dayton said. “Just hope that they’re all OK. We haven’t gone there.”
According to the Charlotte Observer, Newton's truck overturned on the Church Street bridge going over I-277 in Charlotte, near the Carolina Panthers' stadium, after colliding with a Buick sedan. Emergency crews arrived on the scene. There were reportedly no other passengers in Newton's truck.
