2014 Winter Olympics schedule and results: USA hockey dominates, short track is great
Here’s everything you missed while you were sleeping on Monday morning at the 2014 Winter Olympics, and what you have to look forward to the rest of the day.

USA women’s hockey dominates
We’ve mentioned it time and time again since the tournament started, but it’s really a two-team race in women’s hockey between the United States and Canada. The two will battle for the first time on Wednesday, but as they face off against similar opponents, can we get clues into where each team stands?
The latest medal count
Be sure to keep SB Nation's beautiful, constantly-updated medal tracker by your side all Olympics long. Canada beat Switzerland 5-0 in their opening game. It took the USA just 20 minutes to match that same output, as they scored five times in the first period en route to a huge 9-0 win. Amanda Kessel, who might be better at hockey than her brother Phil, had a hat trick.
We’ll see if performance vs. Switzerland is a barometer for the two powerhouses when they face off in two days.
Julia Mancuso settles for bronze
Nevada native Julia Mancuso put together an insane downhill run early Monday, giving her a nearly half second lead over Switzerland’s Laura Gut heading into the second portion of the super combined, the slalom.
Gut failed to finish in the slalom portion, but Germany’s Maria Hoefl-Riesch, the defending gold medalist, made up the ground in the second leg and went on to repeat as champion.
Short track speed skating: pretty great
Canada’s Charles Hamelin made an insane third-to-first move in the final laps of the men’s 1500m short track final, leap frogging his way to a gold medal. USA’s J.R. Celski finished fourth in the event behind Tianyu Han of China, who took silver, and Victor An, who took bronze.
In the semifinals of the ladies’ 3000m team relay -- that’s the one where 1,000 people are on the ice at once and they push each other’s butts -- Korea, Canada, China and Italy advanced to the final.
Curling, curling, curling
- In what was considered a winnable match for the USA, they came up short against Switzerland in women’s round robin play, falling 7-4. In other action, Canada rolled over China, 9-2, Sweden topped Great Britain, 6-4, and Russia beat Denmark, 7-4.
- Canada, the favorite in men’s curling, held off Germany in the first session of round robin play, 11-8. China defeated Denmark, Great Britain defeated Russia, and Sweden defeated Switzerland.
