Winter Olympics 2014: Canada builds medal lead, but big USA day looms

Canada built their medal count lead while you were sleeping, but a big day looms for the United States.

Logan fills Canada sandwich in ski slopestyle

Tuesday’s first event was the Olympic debut of ski slopestyle. They’re on the same course that the USA swept in snowboarding earlier in the week with two gold medals. It wasn’t a golden morning for the Americans in Tuesday’s ladies’ event, but Devin Logan did well enough to bring home the USA’s first silver of these Olympics.

Canada dominated. Ontario’s Dara Howell took first place in qualification with an 88.80 and didn’t rest come the final, throwing down a 94.20 on her first run, more than enough to take the gold. Kim Lamarre scored an 85.00, just four-tenths of a point behind Logan, to take bronze.

Canada now has four gold medals at these Games so far, and nine total medals, good for the overall lead.

USA curling lays an egg

Oof. It was not a good morning for the United States in curling. In the first session at midnight ET, the Americans took an early lead over Russia, scoring three in the third end. But Russia came back hard, scored two in the fourth, fifth, seventh and ninth ends, more than enough to comeback and earn the 9-7 victory.

On the men’s side, China jumped out to an early lead with three in the third end, but unlike the U.S. women, they held their lead, ultimately leading to a American forfeit after the eight end. China won, 9-4.

Both American curling teams are 0-2 so far in round robin play.

The rest of what you missed
  • Germany lost again in women’s hockey, this time to Sweden, 4-0.
  • Shaun White is looking to defend his gold medal in men’s halfpipe, an event he’s won back-to-back times at the Olympics. He opened up with a 95.75 in his first qualification round run, enough to advance straight to the final at 12:30 p.m. ET today.
  • The Americans have more medal chances later Tuesday in women’s ski jumping, which is making its Olympic debut, and cross-country sprint skiing. USA’s Sophie Caldwell tripped and fell in the women’s cross-country sprint final and missed out on a medal.
