SB Nation 2014 Olympics Preview

The Olympic snowboarding events continue on Wednesday with the women’s halfpipe competition. They will be competing for gold one day after the men’s halfpipe event took place. Qualification rounds begin at 5 a.m. ET and the medals will be handed out sometime after 12:30 p.m.

The men’s event was marred by poor slope conditions, leading to multiple crashes and sloppy runs. American Shaun White lost a chance to defend his 2010 gold medal, finishing in fourth place and missing the podium entirely. Switzerland’s Iouri Podladchikov ended up winning the gold in a big upset. It’s unknown if the course will be improved when the women start their runs.

The top American contenders this year include Kelly Clark and Hannah Teter, who both got medals in Vancouver. Clark has won four straight gold medals in the Winter X Games and is considered a big favorite, although she has tough competition from Australia’s Torah Bright, the 2010 Vancouver winner. One potential darkhorse is 17-year-old American Arielle Gold, who is making her Olympic debut.

Here’s the complete schedule (all times are ET):

5 a.m. - Women’s halfpipe qualification

10 a.m. - Women’s halfpipe semifinal

12:30 p.m. - Women’s halfpipe final
