2014 Winter Olympic skiing results: Three gold medals handed out in two events
An unlikely tie leads to two gold medals given out in Women’s downhill.

It’s unlikely you’ll see three gold medals handed out in two events at Sochi, but that happened on the slopes Wednesday thanks to a tie in the Women’s Downhill skiing. It was an unlikely finish, but things were a lot more predictable in the Men’s Nordic Combined.
Medal-winning countries were diverse, with five different nations claiming the six medals; something we haven’t seen in Sochi thus far.
Women’s Downhill
The big news from the mountain was the unlikely tie, the first in Olympic history in Alpine Skiing. Both Tina Maze and Dominique Gisin finished with a time of 1:41.57 in an event that saw five athletes finish withing a half second of each other.
Conditions on the downhill track have been perilous, but only six women failed to complete the tough course. It featured a near-sheer drop referred to as “The Russian Trampoline,” but the field fared well with the conditions.
Team USA’s chances lay with Julia Mancuso, but she was unable to reach the podium, finishing in eighth place.

Nordic Combined
This event is the combination of two different disciplines, the Ski Jump and 10 km Cross-Country. It’s typically an sport that Nordic countries dominate, but the favorite this year was Eric Frenzel of Germany.
Frenzel did precisely what was expected of him, placing first in the event and finishing 4.2 seconds ahead of the field. He finished 10th in Vancouver, and this is his first Olympic medal.
