2014 Winter Olympics medal count: United States sweeps slopestyle skiing

The United States won its first non-snowboarding gold medal on Thursday morning.

The United States got a big boost to its medal count on Thursday morning.

Americans Joss Chirstensen, Gus Kenworthy and Nicholas Goepper were the top three finishers in the men’s slopestyle skiing, and the United States picked up three new medals in the process as well as its first non-snowboarding gold medal. Christensen won with a score of 95.80, while Kenworthy finished with a final score of 93.60 and Goepper had a 92.40 score.

The three medals gave the United States 12 total medals and puts them just one medal behind the Norwegians for the lead in this Olympics.

Later in the day, Poland picked up its second medal and second gold medal of the Olympic Games with Justyna Kowalczyk’s win in the women’s 10-kilometer cross-country skiing event. She won with a time of 28:17.8. Sweden’s Charlotte Kalla came in second with a time of 28:36.2, and Norway’s Tharese Johaug earned a bronze medal with a final time of 28:46.1.

China picked up its first gold medal of the Olympics on Thursday morning with a victory in women’s short track speed skating. Jianrou Li took home the gold medal with a time of 45.263, which was almost six full seconds faster than Italy’s Arianna Fontana, who earned the silver medal with a time of 51.250. Korea’s Seung-Hi Park, who had a final time of 54.207, won the bronze medal.

Norway still leads the way with 13 medals, the United States has 12, and Canada has 10.
