2014 Sochi Winter Olympics: What to watch for on Day 10

Day 10 of the Winter Olympics is well underway. Although there may not be a lot of marquee sports taking place on Saturday, there are still plenty of interesting events going on, with seven medal events set to take place. In addition, there are a bunch of ice hockey and curling matches on the schedule, and the American hockey team gets back in action after having Friday off.

Here are the top events to watch for on Saturday.

The American men hit the ice again, looking to build on their dominant 7-1 win over Slovakia. They face a Russian team that took care of Slovenia, 5-2. This looks to be an intriguing match pitting the 2010 silver medalists against the host nation’s team, hoping to find glory on their home turf. That game starts at 7:30 a.m. ET.

In other men’s action, Sweden plays Latvia and the Czech Republic takes on Switzerland. The women’s quarterfinal round starts with Finland facing Sweden at 3:00 a.m. and Switzerland playing Russia at 7:30 a.m.

Will the American’s new speed skating suits help them this time around? Will it even matter at this point? Either way, Team USA is desperate to get something out of their disastrous speed skating performance in Sochi. They’ll have a few more chances on Saturday, with the women’s 1500m and men’s 1000m events on short track, while the men compete on the 1500m long track final. Even if the US finally get on the podium, they’ll be hard-pressed to stop The Netherlands, who have been on fire in speed skating this year.

More curling fun is on the schedule Saturday as the round robin matches start to heat up. Canada-Great Britain and Russia-China are the top men’s games of the day, while the women’s round features Canada-Russia and Great Britain-Switzerland. The US women are 1-5 and just playing out the string at this point. They’ll face Sweden at 10 a.m.

The one event that manages to be even crazier than luge, skeleton has a medal event slated for Saturday, when the men take their final two runs. Skeleton athletes take four runs each, and the aggregate score is used to determine the medal winners. After two runs, the top three leaders are Alexander Tretjyakov of Russia, Martins Dukurs of Latvia and John Daly of Team USA. Fellow American Matthew Antoine isn’t far behind in fourth place.
