Sweden, Switzerland advance in women’s hockey

Richard Mackson-USA TODAY SportsNoora Raty has been a star for Finland during the women’s ice hockey tournament at the Winter Olympics, but her heroics were not enough to get Finland to the semifinals this year, as Sweden won 4-2 on the back of a 29-save performance from Valentina Wallner in goal.
Pernilla Winberg, who notched three assists for Sweden and played 27:21, was easily Sweden’s best player. Finnish captain Jenni Hiirikoski played 30:37, but couldn’t make the difference for Finland.

Winslow Townson-USA TODAY SportsThe Olympics are where heroes are made, and T.J. Oshie just became the latest.
The St. Louis Blues forward and Warroad, Minn. native has always been strong in shootouts in the NHL, but in a league where that tiebreaker is looked at as a giant gimmick, it’s not a talent that’s all too heralded. But with an IIHF shootout format that allows players to shoot over and over and over and over again, coach Dan Bylsma stuck with his big gun, and it eventually paid off in a 3-2 American victory.

Dutchman Sjinkie Knegt took third in the event, then Koen Verwij took silver in men’s 1,500-meter speed skating to put the Netherlands in a tie with Russia.
The United States and Norway were tied atop the standings heading into Saturday. They still sit at 13 medals.

Streeter LeckaWhy not? During the shift on an earlier shot, Quick exploded to his left laterally in order to make a save on a Russian shot, and his skate hit the post and jarred it out of the moorings. You can see the that the net is off as the puck beats Quick here:
As you can see inside the green circle, the piece of the post that goes into the hole in the ice that holds the net in place is horizontal long the ice, meaning the net is off.

Paul GilhamYou were sleeping Saturday morning? Who does that? Well, here’s what you may have missed while you were doing something other than watching the Olympics. You’re welcome.
Super-G is one of the wildest skiing events of the Olympics. During the final in Sochi, seven of the first eight riders on the course were unable to finish. Blame it on soft snow, or maybe just bad luck, but the early crashes set the stage for Austrian dominance in the event.

Alain Grosclaude/Agence ZoomAustria continued its reign of dominance in Olympic super-G on Saturday. A total of 24 medals have been handed out since the event was added to the Winter Olympics in 1988, and the Austrians have now won eight of those medals after securing gold and bronze in Sochi.
Anna Fenninger took the gold with a time of 1:25.52, nosing ahead of silver medalist Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany by 0.55 seconds. Fenninger’s country-mate, Nicole Hosp, was just 0.66 seconds out of first and 0.11 seconds out of silver, earning the bronze.

Scott Rovak-USA TODAY SportsWhat in the world has happened to the Slovakian hockey program?
After finishing in fourth place just four years ago at the Vancouver Olympics, Slovakia has been perhaps the worst team through two games of the 2014 tournament. As if their blowout loss to the United States on Thursday wasn’t bad enough, they were completely dominated by Slovenia on Saturday in a 3-1 loss.

Richard Mackson-USA TODAY SportsIt’s the United States. It’s Russia. It’s hockey. Twice. OK, they don’t play twice in one day -- that would be dumb -- but the NBC Sports Network is airing the game live at 7 a.m. ET, then again for all the people who can’t, y’know, wake up that early and watch a full hockey game at 6 p.m. Set your alarms or your DVRs, whatever it takes. If we play our cards right, Mike Eruzione is going to charge out of the stands onto the ice without his shirt on during the second period and try to steal Alex Ovechkin’s stick. DO IT, MIKE.
On the women’s side of the ice -- not that we advocate segregating the ice by gender into sides, it’s just an expression -- you can also watch two quarterfinal games live on Saturday, with Scandinavian rivals Sweden and Finland locking horns (what horns?) at 3 a.m. and Russia facing Switzerland at 7:30 a.m. Both of those games are on MSNBC. Winner of Sweden-Finland gets control of the Gulf of Bothnia for a year.
