Sochi Olympics 2014 speed skating results: Shani Davis fails to medal
The United States didn’t have a successful day on the speed skating track.


As the United States and Russia took the ice for their hockey matchup on Saturday morning, Russia took the lead for Olympic medals with its work on the speed skating track.
In the men’s 1000-meter speed skating event, Victor An won the gold medal and Vladimir Grigoerv won silver for Russia, and the Netherlands’ Sjinkie Knegt won the bronze. The highest American finisher in the event was Chris Creveling, who came in 10th.
The women’s 1500-meter final also took place on Saturday morning. Yang Zhou of China took home the gold medal after narrowly beating Korea’s Suk Hee Shim, who took silver, while Italy’s Arianna Fontana won the bronze. Emily Scott’s fifth place finish was the highest for the United State.
The United States’ best chance at a speed skating medal on Saturday was Shani Davis in the men’s 1500 meter race. Poland’s Zbigniew Brodka won the gold medal, the Netherlands’ Koen Verweij won the silver after his time of 1:45.009 in the last pairing of the day. Canada’s Denny Morrison won bronze.
