Team USA vs Russia hockey score: Teams trade goals in second period

Pavel Datsyuk and Cam Fowler scored in the second period to keep the game between Russia and the United States tied through 40 minutes.

It would be the Russians who would break through first on a breakout pass from Montreal Canadiens' defenseman Andrei Markov, finding Pavel Datsyuk in the neutral zone, where he expertly split Team USA's defense and left Brooks Orpik in his dust, wiring a wrist shot through Jonathan Quick low on the glove side for a 1-0 lead 9:15 into the second period. Vladimir Putin was all smiles as the CBC camera panned to him, shaking hands with those around him.

The lead wouldn't last though, with Alexander Radulov taking a cross-checking penalty 15:17 into the second period, Phil Kessel and James van Riemsdyk's strong work on the goal mouth left Cam Fowler wide open with an empty net to tap the puck into, beating Sergei Bobrovsky for the first time in the game. The goal went in off of Fowler's foot, but there was no kicking motion to speak of.

The goal capped off a much better period for Team USA, where they held the shot edge 12-7, and brought the overall total to 22-20 in their favour. However the Russians will begin the third period on the powerplay after Patrick Kane took a hooking penalty in the last second of play.
