Sochi 2014: U.S. hockey plays again, and more events to watch on Day 11
The American men’s hockey team hits the ice after scoring a huge win over Russia, while the speed skaters are still trying to figure out how to get on the podium. All that and more is on the way on Day 11.

Sunday is looking like another busy day in the Winter Olympics. We have more ice hockey games on the schedule, including the U.S.‘s return to action after stunning Russia in a shootout. Other events include speed skating, in which the Americans are desperately trying to get on the podium. We also have an ice dancing program and the start of bobsled, so there should be enough to satisfy everyone on this day.
Let’s look at the top events on Day 11.
Men’s ice hockey
What will Team USA do for an encore? The Americans, and T.J. Oshie in particular, became instant heroes after taking down the Russians in a 3-2 shootout. Avoiding a letdown game is always a concern, but they are facing Slovenia, who got its first win over last-place Slovakia.
In other hockey action, Canada faces Finland in a battle of undefeated teams and the Russians will try to recover from a heartbreaking loss by taking on the Slovaks.
Speed skating
Team USA is running out of time to salvage anything out of its poor Olympic run here. The only event of the day is the women’s 1500m long track run, but the Americans are hoping that switching suits will help to finally get them on the podium. It might be too little, too late considering the Netherlands’ dominant run, but it’s worth a shot at this point.
Figure skating
The ice dance competition starts on Sunday with the short program. This is always worth watching just to see what kind of crazy outfits you’ll see on television cameras ... but enough about Johnny Weir. Americans Meryl Davis and Charlie White had incredible performances during the team event and have to be considered medal favorites here.
Bobsled
“Feel the rhythm, feel the ride, get on up, it’s bobsled time!“ Yes, bobsled makes its long-awaited debut in this year’s games with a two-man run that starts at 11:15 a.m. ET. The Jamaican team is the obvious underdog to root for, but the Germans have to be considered favorites after winning two medals in Vancouver and getting a clean sweep in the luge events. Either way, this event is always fun to watch, even if we don’t have John Candy around to cheer on the Jamaicans.
