2014 Winter Olympic curling results: Canada puts the USA away
The playoff picture is coming into focus for both the men and women—and the United States will not be part of it. Blame Canada.
With scant few days left in the round robin stage of curling, the American hopes of any curling glory in Sochi were fading fast. On Sunday, Canada snuffed them out for good.
In Session 10, the first of three rounds of curling on the day (two for the men, one for the women) Canada upended the United States, 8-6, using three points in the last two ends to snuff out the American chances. That loss took the Americans out of contention for the medal round and pushed Canada further into the mix for moving on. That was in the first round of men’s matches on the day; top-ranked Sweden (one of two medal qualifiers for men’s curling thus far) pounded some more nails in the American coffin with a 6-4 victory in late action.
Elsewhere, Norway picked up clutch wins over Great Britain and Switzerland to keep its medal hopes alive; the Norwegians are now tied with Great Britain in fourth place with one round left. China and Canada went to extra ends jockeying for playoff position; Canada prevailed in the 11th, winning 9-8 and locking up its qualification for the medals. China now needs one more win or a loss from the British or Norwegians to go through.
Meanwhile, on the women’s side of things, the Americans were already out of contention due to being in dead last place out of 10 teams. That didn’t change as top-ranked Canada needed an 11th end to dispatch the Americans, 7-6. Canada was already qualified in women’s curling, but now the Canadians have the top seed locked up over fellow qualifier Sweden. China, Great Britain, Switzerland and Japan are all fighting for the last two spots in the medal round here with one day (and rounds of matches) left to play. Exciting stuff!
