It was a long wait for Gracie Gold and Team USA on Wednesday, but the phenom of American figure skating proved that it was well worth it in the women’s short program.

Gold was the 22nd skater to take to the ice of Sochi and dazzled with a performance that boasted a complicated jump combination. Things could have gotten off to a rough start on a triple lutz, triple toe combination in which she went off-axis, but managed to hang onto the landing. She sustained a few point deductions for her jumps, but avoided any serious deductions. It was a beautifully choreographed piece that earned her a 68.63, good for fourth in the competition.

Kim Yuna of Korea won in Vancouver in 2010 and continued her stellar performance in the short program with a huge score of 74.92. It appeared the mark would be unbeatable, but then came Yulia Lipnitskaya -- the young Russian skater who has captured the hearts of the home crowd.

Pressure was on the 15-year-old to carry the mantle for a nation looking for its next figure skating legend. For much of the routine she was flawless, but a costly fall on a triple flip cost her several points and led to an unexpected and disappointing score of 65.23. It was on countrywoman Adelina Sotnikova to lead the charge, and she didn’t let them down. She finished with a 74.64.

Two more members of Team USA are in the medal hunt, with both Ashley Wagner and Polina Edmunds in the Top 10.

Full results from the Short Program are available here, but these are your top five finishers.
