Sochi Olympics 2014 results: Canada edges USA in hockey, Russia sets Olympic record

Here is a full recap of Friday’s events in Sochi as the final weekend of the winter games approaches.

Team USA picked up yet another gold medal as Mikaela Shiffrin won the women’s slalom in 1:44.54, just ahead of Austria’s Marlies Schild and Kathrin Zettel. Shiffrin led the field after the first run and still managed to knock off eight-tenths of a second on her second time down the slopes.

Ukraine came out on top of the women’s 4x6km relay, edging Russia by 26 seconds to win gold. Norway won bronze. Team USA placed seventh.

Team Canada wrapped up its dominating run in Sochi with an impressive 9-3 victory over Great Britain in just eight ends. That’s right – the Canadians essentially run-ruled the Brits with a gold medal on the line.

In the bronze medal game, Sweden edged China in extras, 6-4. Sweden came into the 10th end down by one, but a couple of nicely placed stones and the hammer tied the score at 4-4 to force overtime.

The Canadians picked up two more medals in the women’s ski cross finals as Marielle Thompson won gold and Kelsey Serwa won silver. Anna Holmlund of Sweden placed third to take home bronze.

The biggest game yet lived up to the hype as the Canadians knocked off the United States, 1-0. Both teams had scoring opportunities throughout, but great play in goal from Carey Price stoned Team USA time and time again. Jonathan Quick allowed just one puck to get past him, and it came midway through the second period as Jamie Benn lit the lamp. That would prove to be the difference, though, as the U.S. fell short of gold for the ninth Olympics in a row.

Canada will face top-seeded Sweden in the gold medal game on Sunday after it defeated Finland 2-1 earlier in the day. The U.S. will take on Finland for bronze Saturday.

In the men’s 500m finals, Victor An of Russia held off China’s Wu Dajing by a nose to win gold. Charle Cournoyer of Canada took home bronze. J.R. Celski of Team USA got off to a strong start but faltered a bit down the stretch to finish in sixth place.

In the women’s 1000m finals, Jessica Smith of the United States missed a bronze medal by three-tenths of a second. Smith crossed the finish line 1:31.301, just behind Suk Hee Shim of Korea. Another Korean, Seung-Hi Park, won gold, while Kexin Fan of China took home silver.

The men’s 5000m relay saw the Russian team of Victor An, Semen Elistratov, Vladimir Grigorev and Ruslan Zakharov set a new Olympic record in 6:42.100. Team USA picked up the silver medal, finishing about three-tenths of a second behind the Russians. China’s four-man team won bronze.
