Todd Lodwick, a Nordic combined skier, will carry the United States flag for Team USA during the Opening Ceremony of the Sochi Winter Olympics, NBC Olympics is reporting.

At 36 years old, Lodwick will become the first American in history to compete in six editions of the Winter Games. He began his Olympic career in 1994 at Lillehammer and has appeared in every installment over the following 20 years. He was a key member of the team that captured the Nordic combined silver medal at the Vancouver 2010 games. He also has six victories and over 20 podium appearances at the Nordic Combined World Cup.

Lodwick retired briefly after the Turin 2006 games, but re-emerged two years later, citing his desire to win a medal at the Olympics.

The veteran comes into Sochi ranked No. 52 in the world and isn’t expected to medal, but will provide invaluable experience and leadership for Team USA.
