Sochi 2014 schedule and results: Snowboarding started while you slept

The Winter Olympics kicked off overnight Thursday, with snowboard slopestyle making its Olympic debut. Both the men and women competed in slopestyle Thursday, finishing up the qualification round.

Canada’s Max Parrot had the highest score of the 28 competitors, who competed in two heats, with the top four in each heat advancing to the final. Parrot, the defending 2014 X Games gold medalist in slopestyle, put up a 97.50 in the first heat to advance straight to the finals. Joining him in the finals are seven other competitors, including countryman Sebastien Toutant, who put up a 87.25, good for third in his heat.

No eliminations were made. The 20 competitors who did not earn a direct berth in the final will battle it out in the semifinals for the remaining spots in the final. Among them will be Canada’s Mark McMorris, the X Games gold medalist in 2012 and 2013, and three Americans: Sage Kotsenburg, Ryan Stassel and Charles Guldemond.

The semifinals will take place at 12:30 a.m. ET on Saturday. The finals will follow at 3:45 a.m. ET.

The Americans had a great showing in the qualification round. Both Jamie Anderson and Karly Shorr advanced straight to the finals, posting scores of 93.50 and 84.75 respectively. Austria’s Anna Gasser put up the highest score, a 95.50 that advanced her straight through to the final.

USA’s Ty Walker appeared injured during her qualification round runs. She went down the hill without touching an obstacle on her first run (that earned her a score of 1.00 out of 100.00), then decided not to take her second run, saving her gas for the semifinals. Jessika Jenson will join her there from Team USA.

Still on the docket Thursday are events in freestyle skiing and figure skating.

9 a.m. ET: It’s the first qualification round for ladies’ moguls. Three Americans will be among the 30 overall competitors, including 2010 gold medalist Hannah Kearney.

10:30 a.m. ET: Team figure skating gets started with the men’s short program. The USA is one of 10 nations competing in the team event, and they’ll send Jeremy Abbott out for this routine. Japan, Great Britain, Ukraine, Germany, China, France, Canada, Italy and Russia are also competing.

12:10 p.m. ET: Team figure skating continues with the pairs short program. The Americans will put Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir on the ice for this routine. TIME has a great explainer on the team event.
