2014 Sochi Olympics: What to watch on Day 4

Day 4 of the 2014 Winter Olympics has a lot on the line, with seven medal events on the schedule and some important qualification rounds in other sports. The big headline events have yet to take place, but there are still plenty of intriguing events being held on Sunday. Here are the biggest competitions and storylines to follow as the games get underway in earnest.

Women’s slopestyle final, 4:15 a.m. ET

One of the first events of the games reaches its conclusion with the women’s medal event. Isabel Derungs of Switzerland had one of the best scores in qualification, with Australia’s Torah Bright and Canada’s Spencer O’Brien closely behind. Jamie Alexander is the top American contender and considered a favorite to make the podium.

Women’s qualification

The USA women got their Olympic run off to a strong start on Saturday by beating Finland, 3-1. On Sunday, Sweden meets Japan and Russia takes on Germany as the host country looks to get Olympic glory on its home turf. The first game kicks off at 3 a.m. ET.

Women’s 3000m final, 6:30 a.m. ET
One of the most exciting events to watch in the Winter Olympics, speed skating has its first medal event with the women’s 3000m run. No American has won gold at this event, although Anna Ringsred and Jilleanne Rookard are hoping to break that streak. Of the two, Rookard is the bigger favorite to reach the podium.

Men’s singles final, 11:30 a.m. ET

Out of all the strange and obscure sports in the Winter Olympics, luge is the one that might make you question the athletes’ sanity most of all. The men’s singles competition finishes up with two more runs on Sunday, including the medal event. Germany’s Felix Loch leads after two runs, followed by Russia’s Albert Demchenko and Italy’s Armin Zoeggeler

Team ice dance final, 12:10 p.m. ET

This is the first year the Olympics have had team figure skating events, and things come to a head on Sunday when the ice dancing competition reaches its medal round. Russia still leads the overall standings, but the United States made a strong comeback thanks to Meryl Davis and Charlie White, who earned first place in Saturday’s short program.
