Layovers are starting to have a major impact in the 2014 Iditarod. As of Friday evening, Martin Buser remains in the lead. Buser is one of just 10 mushers (there are currently 55 competing) to have completed both required layovers. That includes a 24-hour and an eight-hour layover.
2014 Iditarod, standings and results: Martin Buser has the lead Friday
Martin Buser has the lead over Sonny Lindner and Aliy Zirkle as of Friday night at the 2014 Iditarod.

Buser is the first to reach Nulato out of Galena, and was more than an hour ahead of his closest competition, Sonny Lindner, earlier on Friday. Lindner passes Aliy Zirkle on Friday afternoon. Zirkle was the first to reach Galena and earned $1,000 for for the trouble.
The top five is currently rounded out by Jeff King and Nicolas Petit. Both Zirkle and Petit are among those who have wrapped up both of their required layovers, but Lindner and King still have to complete the required eight-hour halt. Zirkle should be passing up Lindner again when the latter has to complete the eight-hour layover at one of the Yukon River checkpoints.
Buser’s early layover has paid off thus far, but there’s still about 400 miles of race to go and his lead is not insurmountable. Still, the four-time champion is one of the favorites at this point. There have been few surprises thus far, but with plenty of race to go, a lot can happen.
