He’s the most predictable winner of the Hobey Baker Award in recent memory, but really, that just means he’s one of the most deserving. Boston College junior Johnny Gaudreau was the best player in college hockey in 2014.

Gaudreau was honored in Philadelphia Friday, the day after his Eagles were eliminated by Union College in the national semifinals at the Frozen Four. Gaudreau, a native of nearby Carneys Point, N.J, was awarded the trophy over fellow Hobey Hat Trick finalists Greg Carey of St. Lawrence University and St. Cloud State University’s Nic Dowd.
It’s expected that Gaudreau will leave Boston College to turn pro. The Calgary Herald reported Friday that he would be meeting the Flames in Vancouver in time to play in their final game of the regular season on Sunday.
If he does indeed leave college, he finishes a three-year collegiate career in which he scored a mind-boggling 175 points in 119 overall games, including 36 goals and 44 assists in 2013-14.
His eye-popping skill is all the more impressive given his size: just 5’7, 150 pounds. That size raises questions about his NHL future, but there’s no doubt that Gaudreau is one of the more dominant players in college hockey history, and highly deserving of the 2014 Hobey Baker Award.
