Former blue-chip OT Austin Golson leaving Ole Miss for Auburn

The former four-star tackle’s potential departure leaves another hole on the offensive line.

Original, April 21: One piece of the vaunted 2013 Ole Miss recruiting class is gone. Former four-star offensive lineman Austin Golson will leave the Rebels after one season in Oxford, according to Rivals' Chase Parham:

Golson played in 12 games as a true freshman for Ole Miss in 2013 before undergoing shoulder surgery heading into the bowl game. He initially committed to Florida State, but decommited and decided on the Rebels. A consensus blue-chip prospect and an Alabama native, he chose Ole Miss over Alabama, Auburn, Stanford, USC and a number of other schools.

He reportedly wants to head closer to home, but it would be rather unconventional for Ole Miss to allow him to go to SEC West rivals Alabama or Auburn.

Everything you need to know

Depth will be a major issue for the Rebels heading into the fall. Coach Hugh Freeze’s team had already lost three of its starting offensive linemen, plus three other depth players. Golson -- now the seventh -- was expected to be a major contributor. He played mostly guard last season but was seen as an eventual tackle. Now, the Rebels are stuck with another question mark on the line.

Update: According to The Clarion-Ledger, Golson has not made a decision on whether to transfer. However, if he does, it will be closer to home.

“My family comes before football,” Golson said. “... There hasn’t been a definite decision.”

Golson said that if he does change schools, it’ll be to get closer to his hometown of Prattville, Ala. He has sick grandparents, and said they “need him” and he wants to be with them.

While Golson said he does not have a list of potential transfer destinations, there is speculation that he could transfer to Auburn, which is close to Prattville.
