Boston Marathon results 2014: Meb Keflezighi becomes 1st American winner of men’s race in 31 years

The city of Boston is celebrating Patriots’ Day with the first home-grown men’s marathon winner since 1983.

David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports

For the first time since 1983, an American runner has won the men’s division of the Boston Marathon. Former Olympic medalist Meb Keflezighi finished with an official time of 2:08:37, becoming the first U.S. citizen since Greg Meyer to win.

That time is a personal best for Keflezighi as well as the second-fastest time by an American male at Boston.

Here’s Keflezighi crossing the finish line, the site of the deadly bombing just one year ago.

Born in Eritrea, Keflezighi and his family arrived in the U.S. as refugees when he was 12. An All-American runner at UCLA, he has since captured three national championships in cross country. He captured a silver medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics, becoming the first American man to medal in the marathon since the 1970s. He came up just shy of a medal in the 2012 Games, finishing fourth.

It’s not his first major marathon victory, having won the New York City Marathon in 2009. That made him the first American male to do so since 1982.

The U.S. placed three runners in the top 10 and six in the top 15. Kenya led all countries in top 10 finishers with four. Here are the results from the top finishers:
