Rita Jeptoo became a three-time winner of the Boston Marathon on Monday morning, setting a course record as she ran to her second consecutive first-place finish in the women’s division of the historic race.

Jeptoo defended her 2013 victory in Boston, setting a course record in the process.


Jeptoo, a native of Kenya, crossed the finish line on Boylston Street in 2 hours, 18 minutes and 57 seconds, breaking the 2:20:43 mark set by her compatriot Margaret Okayo in 2002.

— The Boston Globe (@BostonGlobe) April 21, 2014 Jeptoo was the world’s best female marathoner in 2013, winning in Boston before setting the best time of the year during a winning run in Chicago (2:19:57). Her first win in Boston came in 2006.

Two American women finished in the top 10. Shalane Flanagan of Oregon finished in seventh with a time of 2:22:02 and Desiree Linden of Michigan grabbed 10th with a time of 2:23:54. Kenya dominated the top finishers, landing four in the top 10. Ethiopia had three top-10 finishers, including second (Buzunesh Deba) and third (Mare Dibaba).
