2014 Boston Marathon results: Ernst Van Dyk, Tatyana McFadden win wheelchair divisions

Van Dyk grabbed his 10th career win in the men’s division while McFadden defended her 2013 title in the women’s race.

One year after deadly blasts left multiple spectators at the Boston Marathon finish line handicapped, watching the competitors in the 2014 wheelchair division finish the race took on additional significance. Ernst Van Dyk of South Africa took the men’s race with a time of 1:20:36 while Tatyana McFadden of the United States captured first place among the women with a time of 1:35:06.

For the 41-year-old Van Dyk, it’s a record 10th trip to the winner’s circle. He is the winningest competitor in the history of the Boston Marathon, though he hadn’t won the race since 2010. He never trailed on Monday, jumping out to an early lead and crossing the finish line 38 seconds before his nearest competitor.

McFadden, who also celebrated her 25th birthday on Monday, defended her title from a year ago, grabbing her second career win in the race. It’s been a good start in 2014 for her: she won a silver medal in Sochi at the Paralympic Games before defending her title at the London Marathon last week.

In the handcycle division, Samuel Spencer of New Jersey won the men’s race and Jessica Kensky finished first among the women.
