Hoppertunity has scratched from the 140th Kentucky Derby following a suspected leg bruise, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal, and the absence of the 6-1 second choice for Saturday’s Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs has shaken up the odds as a result.
Kentucky Derby odds: California Chrome remains favorite, pack shuffles after Hoppertunity’s scratch
New odds were set following the second choice’s scratch from the 140th Kentucky Derby.

California Chrome remains the favorite at 5-2, hoping to become the first horse at lower odds than 3-1 to win the Kentucky Derby since Big Brown did so at 2-1 in 2008. After California Chrome, Hoppertunity’s scratch shuffled around odds in preview of advanced betting opening Friday.
Bob Baffert, Hoppertunity’s trainer, still has Chitu in the race. Chitu will start in the No. 12 position at 20-1 odds.
The second choice is now Wicked Strong, now at 6-1 odds. He was previously at 8-1 odds starting in the No. 20 position, but with Hoppertunity’s scratch and the addition of the also-eliglble Pablo Del Monte, Wicked Strong will now start in the No. 19 gate and no longer be the horse furthest outside for the start of the 1 1/4-mile race. Pablo Del Monte is at 50-1 odds.
Danza, Intense Holiday and Tapiture are all now at 8-1 odds. Danza was previously at 10-1, and Intense Holiday was at 12-1, and Tapiture was at 15-1 before Thursday morning’s news. Candy Boy was adjusted to 15-1. The other horses in the field stayed at their lines set when post positions were drawn Tuesday.
Pablo Del Monte was the only horse available to replace a scratched entrant, so any further scratches would not be replaced.
