Race day is upon us at Churchill Downs and it’s a great day for the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby. But we’re still a few hours from the most exciting two minutes in sports (which conveniently means you can still throw a bunch of money at whichever horse you’d like). But the Running of the Roses isn’t the only race Saturday, with a full slate of undercard races to watch.
Kentucky Derby 2014 undercard results: 6 races in the books
Coffee Clique was victorious in the first Stakes race on the undercard, beating out Dame Marie and Effie Trinket.

We’re just under halfway through that undercard and it’s time to check in and see how things are going.
The first race of the day saw Doctor Peter beat out Prosecution and Upkeep in the $40,000 Starter Allowance between three-year olds. Race two saw No Surrender beat out Sheikinator and B and B’s Pulpit over 1 1/16 mile for the $65,000 Allowance Optional Claiming. Masochistic beat out Reeder and A Touch of Poetry in the third race, which was $60,000 Maiden Special Weight.
The fourth race was another $65,000 allowance, this one on turf instead of dirt, and was won by Faerie Queene, who beat out Flashy Gal and Abundantly Clear. Race five was won by Jessica’s Star, with Twang and Ulanbator taking second and third. The sixth race, a $300,000 stakes on turf for four-year old Fillies and Mares, was won by Coffee Clique, with Dame Marie and Effie Trinket bringing up the rear.
There are still some significant races to come. The 10th race is notable for the fact that it features Wise Dan, the two-time defending Horse of the Year. The horse will be racing in the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes, and is the favorite at 4-5.
