Floyd Mayweather remains undefeated with majority decision in great fight with Marcos Maidana

Floyd Mayweather and Marcos Maidana went to war, with Mayweather scoring a competitive majority decision, taking two of three scorecards.

Marcos Maidana was a massive underdog coming in to his fight with Floyd Mayweather on Showtime pay-per-view. His only chance to win seemed to be catching Mayweather with a heavy knockout punch.

Instead, Maidana had a legitimate claim that he deserved to win the decision when his twelve rounds with Mayweather came to a close. The fact that those words can be typed was a shock in and of itself, but Maidana actually managed to get the draw on one of the three official scorecards, but lost the other two.

It was clear from the opening bell that Mayweather was not in for the expected cakewalk. Maidana charged forward, pushed Mayweather into the ropes and began a wild assault that included many missed punches but a huge message to “Money.”

In fact, Maidana sent that same message repeatedly for the first half of the fight. Mayweather would start to gain momentum, then Maidana would shove him into the ropes and pound away to the body and throw wild shots to the head.

Eventually Floyd found a bit of a rhythm. Able to escape from the ropes by clinching, Floyd would take the center of the ring, pop off his jab and then drill Maidana to the body and head with his trademark straight right hands.

Maidana faded a bit as Mayweather showed his championship form, and that cost him on the scorecards of many fans and media, but the official cards suggested that the fight was already decided by that point.

The two judges that scored it for Mayweather scored it 117-111 and 116-112, or nine rounds to three and eight rounds to four for the undefeated star.

Both men suggested that they would be open to a rematch in the future, but such things are never truly decided in the ring in the moments that immediately follow a fight.

So we’ll have to stay tuned to see if a rematch is the next step for these two men who put on a spectacular fight in an event that many expected to be another Mayweather clinic.
