NFL Draft 2014: Sammy Watkins will take pressure off E.J. Manuel

The Bills landed one of this year’s most dynamic talents, but can Watkins help the development of E.J. Manuel?

The Bills made the first major move of the 2014 NFL Draft when they traded two picks, including their 2015 first-rounder, to the Browns to select Clemson WR Sammy Watkins. The logic behind this pick is obvious: Watkins must come in immediately to make plays and take pressure off second-year QB E.J. Manuel.

Watkins is a special talent -- equally devastating going up high to reel in a pass or taking a short pass and housing it with his feet -- and will in theory come in as the Bills' No. 1 receiver. He joins a young receiving corps that is growing in talent, and he will line up with Stevie Johnson, Robert Woods, Marquise Goodwin, and newly acquired Mike Williams.

The bottom line with the Watkins pick is this: he's an explosive athlete that can hit a home run from anywhere on the field. He tilts the defense his way and can be used underneath or over the top with equal aplomb. Interestingly, as defenses focus on Watkins, things should open up for two of the faster receivers in the NFL -- Goodwin and Woods -- and combined with C.J. Spiller, Manuel has all the offensive weapons he needs at his disposal. The stress this could put on defenses is precisely the reason the Bills' front office was willing to pay such a steep price to get its man.

All in all, a very interesting pick that makes Buffalo offense one of most explosive units in the NFL.
