Carlos Gonzalez undergoes surgery to remove tumor from left index finger

The Rockies don’t believe the growth is serious, but it’s unclear when Gonzalez will return to action.

USA TODAY Sports

Colorado Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez had a tumor removed from his left index finger during exploratory surgery on Tuesday in Cleveland, according to Nick Groke of the Denver Post.

Doctors went into the surgery looking for a possible “foreign body” in the finger and found the tumor -- one that is likely benign, Rockies trainer Keith Dugger told Groke. The team’s medical staff will do a biopsy on the growth, which is a common occurrence, Groke adds.

There is still no timeline for the return of Gonzalez, who was off to a slow start before landing on the disabled list last week. The 28-year-old star hit .255/.307/.449 in 52 games while dealing with fingers and knee injuries. The Rockies also lost another All-Star outfielder, Michael Cuddyer, to the DL on Monday with a fracture in his left shoulder. The team will rely on combinations of Drew Stubbs, Corey Dickerson and Brandon Barnes to fill the shoes of the injured veteran duo.

Gonzalez missed significant time in 2013 with a nagging finger injury on his right hand. It limited him to just five post-July plate appearances after he hit .303/.369/.596 -- and .332/.381/.606 on the road -- during the first four months of the season. The Rockies went 23-30 over the final two months of 2013, and are 4-9 in games not started by Gonzalez this year.

CarGo joins Cuddyer (twice), Eddie Butler, Boone Logan (twice), Jordan Lyles, Nolan Arenado, Wilin Rosario, Josh Rutledge, Brett Anderson, Tyler Chatwood (twice) and Jhoulys Chacin as key Rockies players to hit the DL in 2014.
