California Chrome will try to complete the first Triple Crown win since 1978 in Saturday’s Belmont Stakes, but first, there are several undercard races. Wabbajack won the first of the day, the 1 1/16-mile allowance race on dirt.
Belmont Stakes 2014: Wabbajack takes first undercard race
Race day at Belmont is officially underway.
Wabbajack entered with 3-1 odds and finished with a time of 1:42.31. The horse bested second-place Lieutenant Seany O and third-place Bernardo, as well as six other competitors. Bernardo was the favorite at 3-1 odds.

In Saturday’s second event, a 1 1/16-mile stakes race on dirt, Kid Cruz (5-2 odds), named for New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz, claimed top billing in 1:41.12. Legend (3-1) placed second, and Life in Shambles (4-1) came in third. Six other horses raced, as well.
Norumbega (6-1) won won the 1 1/2-mile stakes race, the third of the day, with a time of 2:27.13, besting a field of six other competitors. Micromanage was second, and Cat Burglar was third.
The Belmont Stakes, which will be the 11th race on Saturday, is scheduled to post at 6:52 p.m. ET. California Chrome is the 3-5 favorite.
